Heart Health Checks: Know Your Risk

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia, and many of its risk factors – like high blood pressure and high cholesterol – have no symptoms. A heart health check helps you understand your risk and what you can do about it.

Who is it for?

Heart health checks are recommended for adults aged 45 and over, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from age 30. Your GP may also recommend one earlier if you have risk factors or a family history of heart disease.

What’s involved?

  • A discussion of your medical and family history and lifestyle
  • Blood pressure check
  • Blood tests for cholesterol and blood sugar (if not recently done)
  • Weight and waist measurement
  • An estimate of your five-year risk of heart attack or stroke

After your check

Your GP will explain your result and work with you on a plan. That may include lifestyle changes such as diet, activity and quitting smoking, and, where needed, medication to lower blood pressure or cholesterol. Onsite pathology at our clinic makes follow-up tests easy.
