Are nicotine replacement therapies safe?

Nicotine replacement therapies are widely used in smoking cessation but, like all treatments, they are not risk-free.

Suitability depends on factors such as your medical history, current health conditions, and how the therapy is used. Potential side effects and safety considerations are discussed during the consultation.

No treatment is recommended without individual medical assessment.

Will I feel “high” or impaired with any smoking cessation treatments?

Most smoking cessation treatments do not cause a “high.”

However, some medications can cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, or reduced concentration in some people. If any treatment with potential effects on alertness is being considered, this is discussed in detail during the consultation.

Patients are advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery if they experience any impairment from prescribed medications.

Consultation duration and fees

Once you’ve connected with your consulting doctor, consultations usually only take up to 15-20 minutes. Out of pocket fees apply to all consults ( based on our standard fees ) along with the relevant MBS item .

Is medical weight loss safe?

Yes; all management goals are set by a doctor based on what would be most suitable for your health. You would also be regularly monitored in the clinic along with having regular blood tests etc.

What happens at my first appointment?

At your initial weight loss consultation, we want to know more about you. You will meet on a one-to-one basis with a clinic doctor/nurse who will find out more from you about your lifestyle, eating habits and what you want us to help you achieve.  They will perform a medical assessment of you and will work with you to decide if Waist Wise might be the right fit for you.

Will the treatment make me high?

Any effects from treatment depend on the specific medication, dose, and individual patient factors.

Some regulated medicines may contain compounds that can cause psychoactive effects in certain people, while others do not. If any treatment option with potential psychoactive effects is being considered, this is discussed during the consultation, including expected effects, risks, and safety considerations.  Not all patients are suitable for such treatments, and not all treatments discussed have psychoactive effects. No treatment is commenced without informed consent and careful clinical assessment.

Patients are advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery if they are using and / or experience drowsiness, impaired concentration, or altered alertness from any prescribed medication

Will I get addicted?

Dependence and misuse are potential risks with many prescription medicines, particularly when used long term or outside medical guidance. If any treatment option with a known risk of dependence is being considered, this is carefully assessed during the consultation. Factors such as past substance use, mental health history, dose, and duration of treatment are taken into account.

Not all patients are suitable for treatments that carry a risk of dependence, and ongoing monitoring is essential where such treatments are prescribed. Treatment decisions are individualised, based on clinical need and risk–benefit assessment.

What happens on the day of insertion?

— Bring IUD that you have purchased from the pharmacy
— Take some painkillers (e.g Nurofen or Paracetamol) about one hour prior to the appointment
— Consider having someone care for your children and to accompany you home
— Arrive well hydrated and ensure you have eaten recently to promote better recovery
— Please be aware that the insertion appointment takes 30 minutes, but some people require longer to fully recover. Occasionally the insertion is unsuccessful, and patients may require referral to a public hospital or private specialist.

How to make an appointment to have IUD inserted?

Having an IUD inserted involves attending two appointments, one for assessment and another one for the insertion. Please book an initial consultation with Dr Shilpa Chegu who has had specialized training in Gynaecology & for IUD placement. It is important to inform reception staff that aN IUD consultation is required when booking an appointment.  We also recommend a review appointment 6-8 weeks following insertion of IUD to make sure IUD hasn’t moved and for signs & symptoms of infection.

How and when should the IUD be inserted?

The IUD is inserted into the uterine cavity through the natural opening of the cervical canal by a doctor who has been trained in the correct technique. Once it is confirmed that the woman is not pregnant (e.g. day 3-5 of your period) and a vaginal swab has been taken to ensure no infection is present, IUD can be inserted at any time.
