What happens during a chronic pain consultation?

During your appointment, your doctor may:

  • Review your medical history and current treatments
  • Discuss symptoms and previous management approaches
  • Assess whether further treatment options may be appropriate to consider
  • Explain regulatory requirements, safety considerations, potential risks, and follow-up expectations

FAQ's

Will I get addicted?

Dependence and misuse are potential risks with many prescription medicines, particularly when used long term or outside medical guidance. If any treatment option with a known risk of dependence is being considered, this is carefully assessed during the consultation. Factors such as past substance use, mental health history, dose, and duration of treatment are taken into account.

Not all patients are suitable for treatments that carry a risk of dependence, and ongoing monitoring is essential where such treatments are prescribed. Treatment decisions are individualised, based on clinical need and risk–benefit assessment.

Will the treatment make me high?

Any effects from treatment depend on the specific medication, dose, and individual patient factors.

Some regulated medicines may contain compounds that can cause psychoactive effects in certain people, while others do not. If any treatment option with potential psychoactive effects is being considered, this is discussed during the consultation, including expected effects, risks, and safety considerations.  Not all patients are suitable for such treatments, and not all treatments discussed have psychoactive effects. No treatment is commenced without informed consent and careful clinical assessment.
