Photobiomodulation (PBM) / Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Pain & Healing
Dr. Geoff Catton offers Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as Photobiomodulation (PBM) or cold laser therapy—a safe, non-invasive, and painless treatment for acute injuries and chronic pain.
Key Benefits:
✔ Pain Relief ✔ Tissue Repair ✔ Promote Healing
Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), harnesses gentle red and near-infrared light to soothe pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing—without heat or sedation. This non-invasive and drug-free approach supports natural recovery while integrating seamlessly with holistic care.
How PBM Works
PBM operates through cellular light absorption, triggering a cascade of therapeutic responses:
- Mitochondrial activation: Photons target cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, boosting ATP production and cellular energy for repair. WikipediaScienceDirect
- Anti-inflammatory effects: Light exposure modulates oxidative stress and downregulates inflammatory signals. MDPIJPain
- This combination helps alleviate pain signals and accelerates tissue healing.

Number of treatments required and Is this permanent?
The benefits of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT), are cumulative. Most patients need 6–12 sessions to achieve meaningful improvement or longer-lasting relief.
The exact number of treatments depends on the severity and nature of the condition. After assessing your condition, your doctor will advise on how PBMT may help you and recommend an individualised treatment plan.
Beyond reducing pain and inflammation, LLLT supports the body’s natural healing processes, helping tissues and wounds recover more efficiently. Importantly, it may also improve tissue resilience, making them less prone to future injury.
Are there any contraindications?
LLLT/PBMT is FDA-cleared and widely used worldwide. It is:
Non-invasive (no needles, no surgery)
Painless (most patients feel gentle warmth, if anything)
Safe with no long-term side effects reported over more than 30 years of use
The only safety precaution is to avoid shining the laser directly into the eyes & pregnancy
Are there any side effects?
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been recognised as safe by the FDA, with the only precaution being to avoid direct exposure to the eyes.
For over 30 years, LLLT has been widely accepted in countries such as the USA, Canada, Brazil, across Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, and Japan. During this time, there have been no reports of long-term harmful effects. The therapy is considered non-invasive, painless, and safe.
Unlike other forms of radiation, LLLT is non-toxic, non-thermal, and supports tissue health rather than damaging it. Research shows that it can accelerate healing, reduce muscle fatigue and damage, and lessen delayed onset muscle soreness.
Adverse effects are uncommon. Occasionally, patients may notice a mild ache or discomfort following treatment. This is usually due to temporary reactivation of the body’s inflammatory response and generally resolves within 24–48 hours.
Is there scientific evidence?
Yes. Multiple systematic reviews and clinical trials support the use of LLLT/PBMT for reducing pain and improving function in conditions such as osteoarthritis, chronic low back pain, and tendon injuries.
The Cochrane Library and other peer-reviewed journals have published evidence showing modest but significant benefits.
The World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy recognises it as a safe and effective modality when applied correctly.
